Working from home tips!
Working from home may sound wonderful and at times it can be, but there
are drawbacks. Even the most disciplined woman working from home is going to
have days where they wish they were back in the corporate world! Here are
some suggestions on how to cope:
Find your spot
If you don’t have an actual office at home or study then you need to find
yourself the perfect spot to work in. Grabbing a cup of coffee and curling
up on the couch with your laptop on your lap each day is not a great habit
to get into. Have a dedicated table with good chair and lighting that you
make your own office.
Create an office atmosphere
First thing to do when you walk into your office is put on the radio or
internet through your speakers and have it on low, music or talk radio so
that you have “company” in the background and a feeling that things are
getting busy. You can easily push the mute button when you receive a phone
call.
Get dressed
Its so easy to just stay in your PJ’s and fluffy bunny slippers until its
time to fetch the kids from school or go to your next meeting, but you will
work and feel so much better if you did make the effort to get changed into
office clothes each day and brush your hair and put on make-up! Its true if
you look good you feel good and then in turn work good (bad English, I know,
but its sounds good!)
Taking time out
Remember office gossip and general chit chat? Well it was a complete
distraction and sometimes at home you need that too, so spend some time each
day checking out good websites or phone a friend to clear your head and
focus on your next project.
Step away from the chocolate cake
Many may think now that you are working from home you can gym anytime you
like but the reality is work get’s hectic and because you are at home there
are always other “domestic” chores you have to handle and then your pantry
is calling out to you during the day and this is where discipline comes in.
If you can schedule gym or at least a walk in your diary then try your best
to make sure you keep your appointment with yourself, you will thank
yourself in time. As far as the pantry goes, make sure there is nothing
tempting in there to call your name when you are trying to concentrate on
your spreadsheets!
Get some friends
Working from home alone can get lonely and sometimes you need to bounce
idea’s off something other than the wall, so make sure you take advantage of
real friendships and schedule a tea date or movie or something similar each
month to break the loneliness.
End of day
Working from home means that each time you walk past your PC you can quickly
see if there are any more Emails, or quickly just finish that project and
this is where you will have to be disciplined enough to say NO to work! If
you have a hubby waiting in bed or little kiddies needing your attention
then its time to log off and switch off. Our relationships are far more
important than that last minute email that has come in.
